Foot pain

The foot is the foundation of movement, athletic or otherwise. Feet support weight, help maintain balance and also act as shock absorbers. If you have been experiencing foot pain, something is wrong.

Types of foot pain

Depending on the origin of the pain, there are different types of foot pain. They include toe, fore foot, heel and arch pain. Toe pain is caused by corns and ingrown toe nails that form on top of or in between toes. Toe pain is further aggravated by ill fitting shoes. Fore-foot pain is caused by high-impact activities and improper footwear, shoes that are narrow in the toe areas. When people complain of foot pain, they are mostly complaining of heel pain. It is often caused by plantar fasciitis which is the inflammation of ligaments and tendons in the heel of the foot. It is also caused by heel spurs, which are deposits of calcium that develop under the heel bone. On the other hand, arch pain is caused by ankle injury.

Causes of foot pain

Foot pain is caused by a variety of things. Disease, trauma/injury, ill-fitting shoes, calluses and in-grown toe nails are some of the common causes of foot pain. Still, structural defects and such medical conditions as arthritis and diabetes can also cause pain. Pregnancy causes the build up of fluid and cause feet to swell which can result in pain. Obesity can also cause pain as weight increase results in foot stress. Such high-impact exercises such as strenuous aerobics and jogging have also been known to cause ankle injuries, calluses, plantar faciitis resulting in foot pain.

Prevention and treatment of foot pain

You should always take care of your feet. Always wear shoes that fit properly and alternate shoes daily. Wear the right shoes. If you are going jogging for instance, wear running shoes. You are advised to go for shoes that have cushioning and arch support. If possible you should avoid high heels and narrow-toed shoes. Always trim the nails on your toes straight across. This reduces the risk of in-grown toenails. If you suffer from such medical conditions as diabetes, you should insect your feet regularly. If you notice any changes in the temperature and color of your feet, visit a podiatrist. If you are experiencing foot pain, do not to ignore the pain. Also, do not treat the pain using home remedies as you may aggravate the problem. Instead, you should visit a podiatrist.
